Portraits remain one of the most demanding and rewarding subjects in realistic drawing. Accurate placement of features, careful control of soft and hard edges, and sensitivity to subtle value changes separate a convincing likeness from a generic face. Use these studies to examine how light describes form and how individual features relate within the larger structure of the head.
Studying These Portraits
When you look at a realistic portrait sketch, try to identify the major planes of the head, the direction of the primary light source, and the soft transitions around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Notice how the darkest darks and lightest lights are reserved for the areas of greatest contrast. Copying finished work can be useful for practice, but the greater benefit comes from understanding the decisions that produced the result.
